Chapter Eight

“No, we don’t need to say anything,” I argued, afraid of what I’d hear from him. I was too raw right now, too wounded to try to keep it together.

The sadness.

The regret.

The pain.

All of what he was feeling was all of what I was feeling too.

“Yes, we do,” Daniel insisted. His hand shot out and grasped my arm, pulling me around until I was facing him.

“No, we’re good. I’m good,” I said quickly, too quickly if his raised eyebrow was any indication.

“Not yet, but we will be. You’re here for a reason, Sierra. You fell in love with me for a reason before and…” he didn’t complete his statement. Mostly because he didn’t know how. All of this was just as confusing for me as it was for him. The person he loved was rooted in me somewhere. The only problem was, the person who loved Daniel was closer to my surface than I even cared to admit. It was impossible to come to terms with the fact that I was someone else while still being me.

“I didn’t remember anything else, Daniel.” My voice sounded strained and weak and I did nothing to attempt to strengthen it.

“This wasn’t about you remembering,” he whispered and tried to bring a hand to my cheek, but I moved away before he could touch me.

Daniel scowled, dark eyebrows drawing down over those green orbs. “Just listen to me.”

Daniel took a deep breath while I waited nervously. He ran a hand through his hair and then met my gaze determinedly. “I don’t regret what I did. But I do feel guilty,” he admitted softly, meeting my gaze squarely and without guile.

He stopped suddenly and I could see emotions chasing each other across his face. His mouth was drawn into a grim line and my heart suddenly went out to him. “How could I have such strong feelings for you when I’m not even sure what happened to her?” he asked, his gaze fixed on mine. “Unless you are her,” he continued. “Unless there’s no separation. Unless we’re meant to be here right now, experiencing this, falling deeper and deeper into something we have no choice of preventing.”

I shook my head and closed my hands over my face. “I don’t know what to believe, Daniel.”

“Believe in us,” he said and I felt every muscle in my heart tighten.

I wrapped my arms around myself and sat quietly for several moments, giving Daniel time to gather his own thoughts as I tried to gather mine. He was pacing. Walking back and forth, as though his aim was to bore a hole in the ground.

After about thirty minutes, he stopped the pacing and made his way back over to the blanket. Without a word, he reached down and grabbed his shirt, dragging it over his shoulders.

Then he reached down for my hand and after a moment’s hesitation, I placed mine inside his. His fingers wrapped around mine and he gently pulled me to my feet. He led me toward the river and then we walked, hand-in-hand, along the bank.
